How Remote Engine Start works
Remote Engine Start (option 1CR) is a factory BMW function for starting the engine remotely. To start the vehicle, press the lock button with the BMW logo on the original key three times in succession.
After the engine starts, the vehicle remains locked and the climate control system can begin cooling or heating the cabin according to the selected temperature. The function is integrated into the vehicle electronics and the iDrive climate control menu.
This is not an aftermarket module or engine chip tuning. Activation uses the FSC code for option 1CR, followed by coding of the electronic control units required for Remote Engine Start.
Activation requirements
Remote Engine Start activation is available for BMW vehicles that meet three requirements:
- petrol engine;
- BDC3 (Body Domain Controller 3);
- MGU head unit with iDrive 7 or iDrive 8.
The production year alone does not determine compatibility. The actual electronic configuration of the specific vehicle is what matters, so we check it using the VIN before activation.
Supported BMW vehicles
- BMW 2 Series: G42, G87
- BMW 3 Series: G20, G21, G80, G81
- BMW 4 Series: G22, G23, G26, G82, G83
- BMW 5 Series: G30, G31
- BMW 6 Series GT: G32
- BMW 7 Series: G11, G12, G70
- BMW 8 Series: G14, G15, G16
- BMW X3 and X4: G01, G45, G02
- BMW X5, X6 and X7: G05, G06, G07
- BMW Z4: G29
Control units that are coded
During activation, option 1CR is added to the vehicle configuration, the appropriate FSC code is installed and the electronic control units involved in Remote Engine Start are coded:
- BDC_BODY3 — body electronics control and remote-start authorization;
- DKOMBI — instrument cluster;
- HU_MGU — iDrive head unit;
- IHKA — climate control system;
- additional alarm, parking brake and seat-heating modules when fitted to the vehicle.
The following FSC codes are used for the DME:
- 0x17C — DME1: Remote Engine Start activation;
- 0x180 — DME2: Remote Engine Start activation for the second engine control unit.
How to request activation
Send us the vehicle VIN. We will check the BDC type, MGU head unit and DME configuration and confirm whether Remote Engine Start can be activated on your BMW.
