SME binding

SME binding BMW at BIMFIX

After an accident in BMW electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, the emergency protection of the high-voltage battery may be triggered. At the moment of impact, the vehicle safety system disables high voltage and opens the power circuits of the HV battery to prevent dangerous consequences.

In these cases, pyrotechnic disconnectors or other emergency shut-off elements may be activated, physically opening the contact in the power section of the high-voltage battery. At the same time, a crash state is written to the battery control unit. After this event, the unit no longer allows the high-voltage system to be fully activated.

As a result, after an accident the vehicle may switch on, but the high-voltage battery does not activate, the vehicle does not drive on electric power and does not charge.

In many cases, restoring the vehicle requires replacement of the SME high-voltage battery control unit. This unit controls HV-battery operation, safe activation, charging, communication with other electronic control units and permission to start the high-voltage system.

After installing a new SME unit, it is not enough to simply connect it physically to the vehicle. The unit must be correctly programmed, coded, commissioned and bound to the specific vehicle so the car recognizes it as its own and allows the high-voltage system to operate.

We perform SME programming and binding for BMW electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles after accidents, battery replacement, HV-system repair or installation of a new unit.

What the service includes

  • SME unit programming
  • Unit coding, including NCD Coding 2.0
  • Unit commissioning
  • Transfer of unique high-voltage battery cell codes into the SME unit
  • Synchronization of the unit with the vehicle and the high-voltage battery
  • Fixing errors that often appear in other modules after programming, including SecOC
  • SME validation after programming
  • Verification of high-voltage system activation
  • General vehicle diagnostics
  • Recommendations for fixing other faults

When this service is needed

  • High-voltage battery protection was triggered after an accident
  • The vehicle does not drive on electric power
  • The high-voltage battery does not activate
  • The vehicle does not charge
  • The SME unit was replaced
  • Errors remain in the HV system after unit replacement
  • A new unit must be programmed for a specific vehicle

Remote programming

SME programming and binding can be performed remotely. For the work you need:

  • Windows laptop
  • ENET cable for vehicle connection
  • Stable internet connection
  • TeamViewer installed for remote access
  • Healthy and charged 12V battery
  • External power supply for the vehicle during programming

After connection, we perform the required programming, coding, commissioning, synchronization with the vehicle and check whether the high-voltage system enters operating mode.
